- You are a citizen of the United States.
- You are or will be 18 years of age or older on or before the next election day.
- You are a resident of this state.*
*Under prior law, an applicant had to be a resident of this state for a period of at least twenty (20) days before presenting himself for registration. Residence is now determined as of the day one begins living in Tennessee with the intention of making this state their legal residence.
** Warning**
Giving false information to register to vote or attempting to register when not qualified is a felony punishable by not less than one (1) year nor than six (6) years’ imprisonment or a fine of $3,000 or both.

- You have registered at least 30 days prior to an election.
- The completed registration forms must be postmarked or hand delivered to the election commission office 30 days before an election.
- An application for voter registration does not become official until the Administrator of Elections determines that all required information is complete.
- You
must re-register:
- Within 90 days after a change of name for any reason, except by change in marital status.
- If your right to vote is restored pursuant to T.C.A. 2-2-139.
- If you are moving into this county from another county or state.
- You must notify the election commission in writing or by personal appearance if you are changing your address within this county.

- Individual forms may be picked up at the Post Office, Public Library, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Information Desk at the County Court House, the Department of Safety, the State/Metro Departments of Health, Department of Veterans' Affairs, and local branches of the Armed Forces. Large quantities of postcard forms or individual forms may be picked up at the county election commission office. Requests for a bulk of 250 or more forms should be forwarded to the State Election Coordinator's office.
- Fill in all information asked for on the application.
- Remember to sign your application.
- The completed registration form must be mailed or hand delivered to the election commission office 30 days before an election. Persons using the Postal Service to deliver their registration forms during this 30 day period should be cautioned to have their forms canceled with the postmark to insure that they will meet deadline requirments. Change of Address Forms must be received by the deadline; postmarks do not apply to Change of Address Forms at this time.
- The election commission will notify the applicant whether or not the form has been accepted. Approved applicants will receive their voter registration cards in the mail.
- Persons who register by mail will be required to vote in-person the first time they vote before they are eligible to vote an Absentee Ballot by mail.

The Election Commission Office has no control over the delivery schedule of the U.S. Postal Service. Therefore, individuals who use a by-mail form to register to vote for the first time should be aware of the following factors:

By-Mail Voter Registration forms mailed within 72 hours (3 days) before the voter registration deadlines should receive hand cancelled post marks at a U.S. Post Office branch to ensure acceptance by the Election Commission Office.

These registration applications should be physically delivered to the Election Commission Office or Royal Parkway Branch Post Office, 525 Royal Parkway. The Royal Parkway Branch Post Office is open 7 days a week, 24-hours a day.

If you register by mail, it is important that your application be post marked by the registration deadline date.
Individuals who registered to vote by-mail and are voting for the first time since registering must present an acceptable form of identification.
