Program Description
The Adult Homemaker Program serves elderly and mentally and physically challenged adults who need help with household tasks and/or personal care. Trained paraprofessionals (homemakers), supervised by professional staff, provide the nurturing assistance and support which enables several hundred adults to enjoy life in their own homes in the community, rather than in an institution.
Eligibility
- Low income seniors aged 60+ and mentally physically challenged adults who live alone and are experiencing difficulty performing activities of daily living.
- Adults receiving protective services from Tennessee Department of Human Services who are referred by their social worker.
- Adults residing in Davidson County whose income does not exceed $1004 a month for one person or $1,313 for a couple.
Services Provided
Homemakers assist clients with activities of daily living which they are unable or have difficulty performing, such as:- Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing dishes, and laundering clothing,
- Personal care: bathing, showering assistance, sponge bath, grooming hair,
- Grocery shopping, preparing meals,
- Assisting with simple health care routines such as reminders to maintain diet restrictions, medication regimen and recommended exercises,
- Observing and reporting changes within the home that may affect the clients and the provision of service,
- Give emotional support and encouragement during periods of loneliness, depression, and bereavement.
Professional staff provides casework service to the client and their families, assessing and reassessing their needs every 6 months. In addition, they help clients manage issues with other family members, service workers, landlords, creditors, doctors, and the like.
