Weather Forecasts

It is very important to pay attention to weather forecasts. While not perfect, the weather forecast does indicate the possibility of severe weather, often days before it occurs. A severe weather forecast allows you time to check your emergency kit and make other preparations. Here are your best sources for weather information:

NOAA Weather Radio

NOAA Weather Radio is the best weather warning method available. NOAA Weather Radio is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information direct from a National Weather Service office. The network broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24-hours a day.

A NOAA Weather Radio receiver can be programmed to sound a high-pitched alert tone when severe weather is approaching your area. You do not need to listen to the radio all the time because the tone can wake you up when you are sleeping. NOAA Weather Radio receivers can be purchased at any electronic store for a minimal cost.

Radio and TV

When the potential for severe weather is forecast, local radio and television stations provide up-to-the-minute information on developing weather conditions. Modern technology even offers visual displays of approaching storms.

Warnings

A Warning indicates severe weather exists or is imminent for your area. Pay close attention and be ready to take immediate action, if advised.

Watches

A Watch indicates conditions are favorable for the development of severe weather in your area. Watches allow you time to check your emergency kit and make other preparations.
