Emergency Preparedness

No one wants to imagine a catastrophic event occurring in our community, but planning for an emergency could turn a life-threatening incident into a manageable situation. A family disaster plan could help insure your family's safety, and give you a real sense of comfort in the event of an actual emergency. To learn more, register for the OEM Basic Terrorism Awareness class or get started on your own by following these helpful tips:
  • Call a family meeting to discuss various types of emergencies, and what actions each member of your family should take, including where to meet during a crisis
  • Review emergency plans for your home, including what you should do if something happens in the middle of the night. Also, review plans for school, day care, work, and other places that are an integral part of your family's life.
  • Designate two reunion points: one at a neighbor's house, and the other at a friend's or relative's home across town
  • Designate a phone check-in point with someone across town who can let family members know that you are okay
  • Post emergency phone numbers in your home
  • Teach children when and how to use 911
  • Show family members how to turn off the water, gas and electricity at the main panels/meters
  • Make sure your family has adequate insurance coverage
  • Search your home for hazards and dangerous conditions
  • Take a first aid and CPR class
  • Create a Family Emergency Kit
