Davidson County Rabies Vaccination Clinics Announced

Clinics at 27 Area Schools the Last Three Saturdays in March; Metro Animal Control Offers Shots Tuesdays through Saturdays in March

The Metro Public Health Department and the Nashville Academy of Veterinary Medicine will hold their annual rabies vaccination clinics at 27 area schools the last three Saturdays of March from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (skip to attached list of schools.) Rabies vaccinations will be offered at Metro’s Animal Control Facility, 5125 Harding Place, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., throughout March.

“Offering the low-cost vaccinations during the week at Metro Animal Control, and Saturdays at the facility and at area schools will hopefully allow more people to come for their pet’s rabies vaccination,” said Brent Hager, Director of the Metro Public Health Department’s Environmental Health Services.

Rabies vaccinations will be offered for $10 each for dogs and cats -- less than the average vaccination and office visit charged at area veterinarian offices.

“We want to remind everyone that we register and issue rabies vaccination tags for cats and dogs that are vaccinated at our March clinics,” said Judy Ladebauche, Director of Metro Animal Control. “Having a tag and registration on file helps us find a dog or cat’s owners should they lose their pets. The tag and registration will provide quick confirmation of a current rabies vaccination in bite investigations,” Ladebauche said.

Metro ordinance 8.04.040 requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated annually for rabies. During the past year there were 11 skunks and two bats that had confirmed rabies in Davidson County. There were no human rabies cases reported in Davidson County. Rutherford County had 31 confirmed cases of rabies in wild animals and Williamson County had 11 confirmed cases of rabies.

Metro Animal Control will offer Avid Microchip implants for $20, Tuesdays through Saturdays in addition to offering rabies vaccinations. Microchips will not be offered at the school vaccination clinic locations.
