Metro Director Will Lead Commission’s Historic Mission Against Discrimination
NASHVILLE – The Metropolitan Human Relations Commission selected Kelvin D. Jones as its new executive director Wednesday, March 10, 2004.
Jones was recommended following an extensive national search conducted by a Commission committee and Gerald Plock Associates, Inc., of Flower Mound, Texas. He was approved unanimously by the 17-member Commission.
“The Metro Human Relations Commission is confident Kelvin Jones will give us strong leadership to fulfill the Commission’s historic mission, provide community wide education to reduce discrimination in employment, housing, and financial services, assist efforts to promote respect for diversity, encourage improved race relations and address complaints brought to our attention,” said Hershell Warren, Metro Human Relations Commission Chairman.
“Nashville’s leading role in the 1960s fight against racial discrimination led to the creation of the Human Relations Commission. I’m proud to serve the Commission and the Nashville community to continue a service that has been so important to our community for over four decades and has made the city a better place to live and work,” said Jones.
Jones’s salary will be determined in the coming days by Metro Human Resources guidelines and a review of pay range for executive directors for similar positions in comparable markets, Warren said.
Jones is currently interim director of the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission. He has also served as deputy director for the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development and as Mayor Bill Purcell’s special assistant for legal affairs.
Jones was a corporate attorney in private practice at Bass, Berry & Sims from 1997-99, before joining Mayor Bill Purcell’s administration. He is a graduate of Howard University and received a law degree from the University of Alabama.
