Metropolitan Action Commission Gears Up to Celebrate National Community
Action Month
Agency Saves Over $1 Million through Volunteer Program
Nashville, TN—During the month of May, the Metropolitan Action Commission, the Community Action Agency for Nashville and Davidson County will join 1,000 other agencies across the nation to celebrate National Community Action Month.
The National Community Action Month was established by the National Community Action Partnership to showcase how Community Action Agencies across the country are helping low-income people change their lives. Metro Action, despite the constant threat of federal budget cuts and an increased demand for services, continues to be a beacon of hope for Nashville’s low-income Families.
In honor of National Community Action Month, Metro Action will recognize 72 outstanding volunteers, community partners and financial contributors at the agency’s 6th Annual Community Action Awards Banquet on May 11 at the Sheraton Music City Hotel at 7 p.m.
Honorees will receive awards for their service or donation provided to the agency. Steve Hayslip, morning news anchor-reporter for NewsChannel 5 (CBS affiliate), will join the agency’s executive director Cynthia Croom in presenting the awards.
Last year more than 3,800 people volunteered at Metro Action, which equated to 106,144 volunteer hours and $1,067,854 savings to the agency.
“This event is very special to us because it allows us to honor those persons and organizations who work as our partners to make a difference in the lives of the families and the children we serve,” said Croom.
Dancers from the Nashville Ballet, which is one of many community partners of the agency’s Head Start program, will perform a portion of “Leap Frog Leap,” which is from a special performance offered free for children enrolled in the Head Start program through the Nashville Ballet’s Outreach program. The reigning Miss Tennessee Latina, Janet Abeja will introduce the performance.
The Metropolitan Action Commission provides services to low-income families such as rent and utility payment assistance, GED and college preparatory assistance through the agency’s Community Services division.
The agency also administers the Head Start Program, which provides early childhood education and health and nutrition services for children ages 3-4 years old from low-income families. Metro Action’s Head Start program is the largest provider of early childhood education in Davidson County.
