Frequently Asked Questions Answered by Debix Identity Protection Network
- How does it work?
- When you sign up with Debix, we set Fraud Alerts with each
of the 3 credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
When a creditor opens up your credit file to process a new credit
application, they will see the Fraud Alert and must contact you
before opening the account.
- Do all banks have to call me before opening new accounts?
- The FACT Act of 2003 states that, if you have a Fraud Alert on
your credit file, all banks and creditors must call you before
opening new credit accounts. This includes all credit cards, loans
and mortgages, as well as some utility accounts and checking accounts
that include a line of credit.
There are exceptions and some creditors still ask personal questions
or send letters requesting additional verification. In all cases,
they must take extra precaution to make sure the credit application
is not the result of identity theft. If a creditor opens a fraudulent
account without calling you first, Debix can provide a record
demonstrating that the creditor failed to honor your right to
a phone call and use that record to speed the recovery process.
- How do banks contact me?
- Debix assigns a unique secure phone number called your Debix
Safe Phone Number to your account and places that phone number
in your credit file. When a bank reviews your credit file they
will see your fraud alert and call your Debix Safe phone number.
Debix’s
secure voice server will answer and contact you immediately for
approval.
- Does Debix keep my cell phone number private?
- Yes. Debix does not provide your personal phone numbers to banks,
creditors, or even debt collectors.
- Can Debix call me at more than one number?
- Yes. Debix’s Find Me feature will call you at up to three
registered phone numbers.
- What happens if I miss a call?
- If you miss the call, you can always call us back at 888-DebixMe
(888-332-4963) to approve a request. When you return the call,
Debix will play the request for your approval.
- Is the Debix warning call placed by a person
or a computer?
- It is placed by our secure voice servers, so there is no delay.
Our voice servers run 24/7, so you can always call in to approve
or deny credit requests at any time.
- How can I be sure it is really Debix calling
me?
- While Caller ID can be faked, you can be sure it is Debix calling
when you hear your Voice Key played at the beginning of every
call. During
registration, you will record a Voice Key by speaking a short phrase
like “I am safe with Debix."
- How is Debix different from credit monitoring
services?
- Credit monitoring services identify fraudulent activity only after
it has occurred. Debix gives you a warning call before the damage
is done.
- Will Debix affect my ability to use my existing
credit cards?
- No. Debix Identity Protection only affects new credit accounts.
- Can a bank reject me because I am using Debix?
- Absolutely not - it is against the law. Contact Debix immediately
if this occurs.
- How do I sign up?
- If you are a registered voter in Davidson County affected by the
recent theft at the Election Commission you should be receiving a
letter with detailed instructions on how to sign-up. Once you receive
your letter containing your activation code, you can sign-up online
at www.debix.com/nashville or by mailing
in an application found here.
