NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Davidson County Election Administrator Ray Barrett said that further investigation has revealed a greater loss of information than originally thought in the recent office break-in and that voters’ social security numbers may be involved.
“As we looked deeper into determining the extent of loss that occurred during the holiday breakin, we now know that full social security numbers were included on the voter files contained on one or more of the stolen computers. Initially, we thought that the only information was the same that the public can purchase when putting together mailing lists, we now know that was incorrect”, said Mr. Barrett.
It has been reported that the Davidson County Election Commission offices at 800 Second Avenue were burglarized over the Christmas holiday and that computers were missing from the offices that contained names and information on all registered voters in Davidson County.
The Election Commission would like to formally notify the public that their full social security number may be available to outside parties and ask that people be alert to this fact and monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity.
The Election Commission intends to send a notice to every voter in Davidson County informing them of this potential problem within the next week.
Mr. Barrett has also asked Metro’s IT services to work with his office to make immediate changes to safeguard against any future security problems of this kind.
The Election Commission does not anticipate that the theft will cause any problems in the upcoming Presidential Primary voting which begins on January 16.
