Assuring public safety is one of the basic expectations people have of government.  This speaks to the ability of public safety organizations to communicate and respond to emergencies, prevent and reduce the occurrence of fires, and impact crime at every level and age group.

Becoming the safest big city in America continues to be one of the priorities of the Metro Nashville Government. Some key measures of Metro’s performance for the fiscal year 2006 (July 2005 – June 2006) include:

  • - 5.7% Change in total crime from FY2005
  • - 6.5% Change in property crime from FY2005
  • - 2.2% Change in violent crime from FY2005
  • 84% Percentage of Nashvillians who felt safe in their community
  • 5.52 Average response time in 2005, in minutes, for Fire/EMS assistance
  • - 52.5% Change in residential fire deaths between 1996-2000 and 2001-2005
  • - 14.6% Change in average time to answer a 9-1-1 emergency call from FY2005
  • 87% Percentage of truant children in compliance with their truancy valid court order
  • 63% Percentage of male Correctional Development Center inmates completing structured correctional services not returning to jail within 12 months
  • 59% Percentage of female Correctional Development Center inmates completing structured correctional services not returning to jail within 12 months
  • 100% Percentage of time Metro’s 800 MHz Radio System was available to end users
