Metro Updates Codes – Adopts 2000 Editions
The Metropolitan Government recently passed Council Ordinance
#BL 2002-1142 adopting the 2000 editions of the Standard Building Code©,
Standard Plumbing Code©, Standard Fuel Gas Code©, Standard Mechanical
Code© as well as the 2000 edition of the International Energy Conservation
Code© to govern the construction of buildings and structures. The
ordinance also adopted the 2000 editions of NFPA 1 and 101, the NFPA Fire
Code© and Life Safety Code©, respectfully.
The codes include construction requirements and standards applicable
to all new buildings as well as building additions, remodeling or change
of use. Although the updated code editions apply to new building permit
applications made on or after October 1st, a transition period of up to
6 months will be allowed for construction projects already designed or
contracted for construction under prior code editions.
Ordinance #BL 2002-1142 also included a number of local amendments
to each of the model codes. Most of the local amendments were either administrative
in nature or were proposed to clarify the code requirements, to modify
the documents for consistency with each other or with other local or state
laws or codes, or to recognize empirical construction practices prevalent
