Frequently Asked Questions - Traffic

Q1

How much is my ticket?

A1

The amount due for a particular ticket depends on the type and number of violations cited on the ticket as well as on your past driving history. For help in calculating the amount due, please visit our “Pay the Ticket” page.

Q2

If I receive a ticket for failure to have proof of insurance and I just pay the fine, what happens?

A2

If you were cited for not having proof of insurance in the vehicle, please visit our Insurance Violations Page for specific information.

Q3

What happens if I sign up for Traffic School but don’t pay the fines and fees I owe to the Traffic Violation Bureau?

A3

Only moving violations can be satisfied by attending Traffic School. Failure to pay the $42.00 Administrative Fee due on the citation and the fines or fees for any non-moving violations on or before your compliance date will result in the assessment of additional fees, possible suspension of your driver’s license and referral to the Traffic Warrant Division for collection by wage garnishment or levy of property.

Q4

When is my court date?

A4

As a convenience to Traffic customers, you are no longer required to appear in court to satisfy your citation. However, you must fully satisfy your citation within forty-five (45) calendar days from the date the ticket was issued using the three options that are now available to you. For information regarding the options for satisfying your traffic citation, please click here.

Q5

The information on my ticket says I have 45 days to pay my ticket. Does this include weekends?

A5

Yes. Only if the 45th day falls on a weekend or holiday observed by the Traffic Violation Bureau does your compliance date move to the next business day. For detailed information on calculating your “Compliance Date”, including a list of holidays observed by the Traffic Violation Bureau, please click here.

Q6

How do I know if I’m eligible for Traffic School?

A6

Once your request for Traffic School has been received, the Traffic School Office will determine if you are eligible to attend based on your driving history and on which Traffic School classes you may have already attended. If you hold a commercial driver’s license issued in any state, you are not eligible to attend Traffic School per 49 C.F.R. §384.226 and T.C.A. §55-10-301(c). For additional information on the Traffic School or to register online, please visit their web site. Note: Only moving violations can be satisfied by attending Traffic School. If you have also been cited for non-moving violations, you must satisfy those violations with the Traffic Violation Bureau by your compliance date.

Q7

How do I contact the Traffic School?

A7

The Traffic School is operated by the Davidson County General Sessions Court, not the Traffic Violation Bureau, and may be contacted at (615) 862-8345.

Q8

I can’t make my assigned school date. Can I reschedule it?

A8

You may reschedule your traffic school class only one time and it can only be done prior to your originally assigned school date. In order to reschedule or if you missed your class due to an emergency, call the school office at (615) 862-8345 to discuss it.

Q9

Can I enroll in the Traffic School online?

A9

Yes. You may now register and pay for Traffic School on the General Sessions Traffic School web site. In order to enroll online you must have your ticket number and birth date. For additional enrollment options, visit our “Go To School” page. Note: Only moving violations can be satisfied by attending Traffic School. If you have also been cited for non-moving violations, you must satisfy those violations and the administrative fee with the Traffic Violation Bureau by your compliance date.

Q10

Can I attend Traffic School online?

A10

If you are eligible for a First Offender and DDC4 class, you may request to take the class online. For more information, visit the Traffic School’s web site.

Q11

I lost my ticket but I want to apply for Traffic School. What can I do?

A11

You may call the Traffic Violation Bureau to get your ticket number and enroll in Traffic School online. You may also download and complete a Traffic School application and mail or deliver it to the Traffic Violation Bureau along with one check, money order or cashier’s check for $65.00 payable to Metro Government for the class and one check, money order or cashier’s check payable to the Traffic Violation Bureau for the $42.00 Administrative fee plus any fines or fees owed for non-moving violations cited on your ticket. The Traffic Violation Bureau’s street and mailing address may be found on our “Contact Us” page. For detailed instructions on responding to a traffic citation, please click here.

Q12

How much time do I have to pay my ticket after the compliance date?

A12

Once your compliance date has passed, a default judgment is entered against you, increasing the amount you must pay to satisfy your citation. You have 10 calendar days after your compliance date to pay the increased amount before the judgment is reported to the Department of Safety and your citation is referred to the Traffic Warrant Division for collection.

Q13

My ticket doesn’t have a lot of the information that this web site talks about. A Tennessee State Trooper wrote the ticket. Does that matter?

A13

It certainly does. It sounds like you got a “State Citation” and those tickets are not handled by the Traffic Violation Bureau. State Citations are handled by the Criminal Court Clerk’s Office. If you received a State Citation for driving on a suspended license and have not yet been booked, you can call (615) 862-5601. ext. 1388 for information. For all other State Citations, call (615) 862-5653.

Q14

Can I pay my traffic ticket online?

A14

Yes. We are pleased to announce the availability of online payment processing.
