Records Storage and Retrieval
In 1991 the Metro Records Center was dedicated to provide departments with secure, orderly, cost efficient storage and retrieval for their inactive records. Due to the need for additional space and to facilitate all the functions of records management, the division of Metro Records Management received approximately 30,000 square feet of the newly renovated Metro Southeast complex in 2006. This area is equipped with sprinklers, fire and security detection systems, along with temperature control for a stable environment. Using software developed for commercial records operations, key descriptive
and activity information is available from the point of departmental
transfer to the final disposition of the stored records. Barcode technology
is an essential component of the system with each individual shelf
location, container and requested file being labeled with unique barcode
identification.
Custody and access to records transferred to Metro Records Management
remain within the department's authority. Therefore, records stored
with Metro Records Management are not accessible directly by the public. Members of the public who wish to obtain access to government records
should feel free to contact Metro Records Management for guidance
to identify the departmental custodian of any records that are needed.
